Brighton’s Best Cocktail Bars

Cocktail hour is our favourite hour - not only because we get to drink delicious drinks but get seen in the best places in town!

Ladies, we all know that cocktail hour is our favourite hour - not only because we get to drink delicious concoctions that tickle the taste buds, but we also get to be seen in the coolest places in town. So take inspiration from last summer’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ and get ready to feel like Daisy Buchanan as you sip on your Long Island iced tea.

Koba 135 Western Road, Brighton

Brighton’s oldest cocktail bar - with 13 years of experience behind it to perfect the drinks and now a firm favourite of discernible cocktailistas. This award winning cocktail bar was also nominated by Elle magazine as one of the best martini bars in Britain. This bar is a must visit for any hen party. These guys know how to mix drinkable treats up in a moment. Whether it’s shaken or stirred, Passionate Mule is a firm favourite now that the sun is starting to shine: Mount Gay Rum, shaken with passion fruit puree, fresh lime juice and ginger cordial, served long over ice and topped with ginger beer is the perfect cocktail treat for summer. Sweeten the bride to be up with the Koba special: The Turkish Delightini; a sweet mix of Manuka honey-flavoured vodka, rose petal liquer, creme de cacao and Cariel, Vanilla Vodka - it’s also served up with a piece of Turkish delight to really satisfy any among you with a sweet tooth.

Merkaba, 7 Jubilee Street, Brighton

Set in the heart of Jubillee Street, the distinctive Merkaba bar is an oasis of calm; timber slanted walls, fish tanks and futuristic blue hues fill the walls. You’ll feel as if you’re in Sex and the City as you sip your Margarita. They also do cocktail making classes here too so you can learn to shake and stir like the bartenders, which is of course part of the fun of ordering cocktails. The Bonnie Bramble is a must a delicious mix of absinthe, whisky and blackberry jam that’s tasty at any time of the year. It’s the perfect setting to be seen at, especially if you’ve shopped till you’ve dropped in the Laines that day - Merkaba manages to combine elegance, sophistication and fun simultaneously.

Bohemia Brighton

Bohemia 54-55 Meeting House, Brighton

Set over three levels and arguably one of the coolest places in town, this bar opened back in 2012 and is a quintessentially Brighton Bar. Murals of the Beatles faces cover the seats in this 1920s inspired watering hole. You’ll go back to a time where you can really enjoy being looked after by dedicated staff attending to your every need. Favourites of the menu the ‘Jay Gatsby’ Gentle classic which is 12 yr Chivas Regal mixed with cherry heeling, lillet rose and apple juice. Wake yourself up with the Cactus kicker (who needs shots?) silver tequila, Midori melon liqueur, pineapple juice, sour mix and Sprite, and served over ice. For the sophisticated among you, the champagne cocktails too are a tasty treat. It’s not just the drinks that are to die for; the roof terrace in the summer gives the impression of a high society summer party.

Meat Liquor 22-23 York Pl, Brighton

Not the obvious setting for a cocktail/ burger lounge, it’s really a must visit. It’s funky, colourful and vibrant - the dark surroundings are illuminated with pink neon lights, making it feel like you’re in the depths of New York City as opposed to Brighton. The cocktails are delectable and delicious: a restaurant too, the burgers and buffalo wings are exceptional. It’s not the place you want to go for a quiet, relaxing drink but the loud decor, funky graffiti adorns the walls and mixed with the music (90’s US rap mixed with British classics like Blondie and Eurythmics) will ensure your night gets off to the right start. Try the House Grog, an exotic and potent blend of three different types of rum and fruit juices to get you into the spirit of things.

Las Iguanas 7-8 Jubilee Street Brighton

Get ready to Samba and soak in all the Latin party spirit in this flamboyant venue that makes you feel like you’re in Rio. Whether you’re eating or drinking - or both, this is the best place to get the party started. Tantalise the taste buds with the Las Iguanas Magnificent Cachaca, with cachaca, lime and sugar that’s bursting with flavour, Brazillian’s national cocktail for the best Brazilian flavour - quite simply sunshine in a glass. The setting is fun, informal and lively. The tables are made of sustainable wood - the Latin American artefacts adorn the walls and you’ll easily forget that you’re in a chain restaurant.
