BYOC Brighton - A Hidden 1920’s Gem
Transport yourself back to the time of gangsters and Gatsby at BYOC Brighton
BYOC is a new kind of cocktail bar in Brighton. With many of the cocktail bars taking on a vintage feel, BYOC, quite literally is styled like a 1920’s speak easy, so much so that they do not serve and alcohol. Once your table is booked, you have to take your own spirits and their mixologists will use an assortment of accompaniments to mix up some cocktail magic right there at your table. Even the entry is done via a secret door way, where you have to knock to be let in. Here is our review of a night at BYOC in Brighton.
BYOC is so hard to find you won’t be the first who decides it doesn’t exist. Ten minutes later you’ll find it hidden by the façade of a disused shop on Middle Street in the heart of the Lanes.
As you make your way down stairs your eyes adjust to candle-lit surroundings and you are transported into the 1920s: you’ll find a small, atmospheric speak easy decked out in lovely wooden furniture and a cocktail trolley that means business. Mixologists are on hand to mix up your favourite tipple so you don’t even have to leave your seat.
For a two hour slot you pay twenty pounds per head and take your own spirits while they provide the mixers. There’s no menu – you just let the bartenders do their stuff and - just like magic - the drinks keep coming to the table. The secret ingredient house syrup transforms any cocktail and makes this place a cut above the average cocktail bar.
The drinks arrive about every thirty minutes or so on the antique drinking trolley filled with fresh syrups, fruits and salts. Leftover sambucca is turned in to an espresso martini with tuaca; the pineapple punch with rum is sweet but tasty; the gin and cucumber is delicious. Water is served with mint for the moments between cocktails so you don’t leave in a drunken stuper.
BYOC is perfect for a special occasion or if you just fancy something a bit different. If there’s a few of you in your group it works out better as you have more of a variety of mixers plus it’ll get used up as you don’t want to be walking the streets of Brighton afterwards with heavy bottles of leftover spirits.
Although it’s not the cheapest night out it’s a little gem of a place - if you can find it that is. Find out more http://byoc.co.uk/brighton/index.html
